Description
The best white grape of Southern Italy since it was first brought there by the Greeks and the most likely source of ancient Rome’s famous Falernian wine. From first aromas through the lingering finish, the region’s volcanic soils speak clearly here. Aromas of tangy pineapple, peach, apricot, fresh straw and white flowers lead to tangy, brisk, flavors of stone fruit, lemon curd, and green peach. With air, the fruit gets richer and riper, but the sense of warm stones and salty mineral stays present through the complex finish, where a note of fennel emerges.
From the volcanic soils of Italy’s Campi Flegrei – or, the Phlegraean Fields – where moon-like craters dot the landscape and more than 100 pools bubble and steam away just a few miles from Naples and Mt. Vesuvius. Here, the family of our favorite Italian importer, Maurizio Farro, have been growing classic Campagna wines since the 1920s, but it’s hard to believe they’ve ever done better work than this!
