About Bessa Valley
A Bulgarian wine producer found in the foothills of the Rhodope Mountains. Here, a continental climate ripens 140 hectares (345 acres) of vineyards which are planted to Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon on clay-limestone soil.
Founder Count Stephan von Niepperg has a rich family history of wine production that dates back about 800 years. He is also the owner of several Bordeaux properties including Chateaux Canon La Gaffelière and La Mondotte. However, Dr Karl-Heinz Hauptmann is the main shareholder of Bessa Valley.
The Bessa Valley has a strong continental climate with no influence from the Black Sea. Rather, cooling winds from the Rhodope Mountains offset extreme temperatures – the summers are hot here and the winters are cold. Proximity to the Maritsa River also helps to moderate temperatures.
