Description
Heidsieck Cuvee Rare is a blend of 17 crus which were aged for over seven years in the House’s cellars. The blend is 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir, both from Montagne de Reims. The appearance is a dazzling, crystal-clear, citrine yellow gold enlivened by a delicate, shimmering effervescence. The fruit emerges as delicate and golden, with muted exotic fruits (mango and kiwi) and notes of hazelnut, almond and fig. Mild spices (white pepper, smoked tea and cocoa) reflect the wine’s depth but are honed, precise, and in harmony. The palate is voluptuous, with meringue-like delicacy, while nuances of mint tea, lime, kumquat, pineapple and candied ginger evoke distant lands.
It is a regular award winner, with the 2008 winning Champion Sparkling Wine at the 2023 International Wine Challenge. Emilien Boutillat, the chief winemaker, has taken over from the esteemed Régis camus to great effect.
The wine is a vintage release only made in the best vintages having been launched with the 1976. This equates to roughly one in four years over the last four decades, with the 2013 edition being the 13th.
The fruit is sourced mostly from the Montagne de Reims with a portion from the Côte de Blancs. It is made entirely in stainless steel tanks to emphasize fruit character.
