Description
Aromas of wild strawberries, crushed dark red cherries, and rose petals fill the bowl. Black tea, wet crushed rock, and notes of where the forest meets the meadow yield thyme and more delicate floral notes with finely-grained tannins leading to a long, sumptuous finish. We find this wine to be remarkable, one we keep reaching for repeatedly.
RAEN stands for Research in Agriculture and Enology, Naturally. It seems we all have that desire to build, to create, to research. The story we all associate with the man whose name is virtually synonymous with Napa Valley (Robert Mondavi) is that of a man who left big shoes to fill. His son Tim Mondavi worked with the family to create their next Napa legacy, the amazing Continuum Winery atop Pritchard Hill. His sons, Carlo and Dante Mondavi looked even further west. Carlo and Dante wanted to find a new expression for the family’s love of wine. With RAEN, their shining new chapter is ready for the world, and we are floored. These are the exceptional, balanced, and complex wines we seek, showcasing the best sites on the far western Sonoma Coast.
Named after and dedicated to their grandfather, Robert Mondavi, who taught them to be committed to excellence, the Royal St. Robert, this wine comes from what Carlo and Dante feel are their finest barrels painting a picture of the cool, rugged westerly hills of the true Sonoma Coast. On summer mornings, pacific fog engulfs the vineyard, covering the fruit with essential ocean mist. The fog recedes back in the late mornings, drenching the vines in the afternoon sunlight and warmth, ripening the fruit. This bottling is a selection of their finest barrels, giving a window into the cool, rugged westerly hills of the true Sonoma Coast.
